Imagery. Ehrenreich focuses on her small, frantic movements to
emphasize Holly’s hesitancy to accept her generous offer of food, after
forgetting her lunch. She portrays Holly in this way to emphasize that Holly
is not used to being helped by others at her job and is unsure how to react,
but does really appreciate the food, as she is sick and hungry. This relates
to Ehrenreich’s purpose in this chapter to show that while these women work
as a group, they are overworked to a point that they cannot or do not care
for one another, or themselves. Ultimately, this is not the fault of the
workers’ but of the unrealistic expectations of the companies.
